Wolves 0, Tottenham 2: Gregg Evans' big match verdict

ANYONE who knows their football will know that Emmanuel Adebayor scores on his debut.

Also, more often than not at Molineux, any player who gets jeered from the terraces usually comes back to haunt them.

With this in mind, maybe the over-enthusiastic matchday announcer should have told the South Bank not to boo the Togolese striker when he was revving up the crowd as the teams emerged on to the pitch.

Quite why they felt the need to give the on-loan Man City star stick remains a mystery.

But in the end it was his 67th-minute goal that made all the difference.

Ironically the boos died out after he had scored and the criticism turned towards their own players – Karl Henry being one of those.

Make no mistake, it’s only a very small minority that feel the need to get on the backs of their own players – probably the same ones who feel that Mick McCarthy is not fit to be manager of their beloved club.

But it’s sad to see.

To hear fans talking about sacking the manager, after he has guided the club to the Premier League, kept them in it for two seasons, and started the current campaign in such a positive way, is just totally ridiculous. As it happened, Wolves matched Spurs – a team who were in the Champions League last year – up until the goal.

But with the likes of Adebayor, Luka Modric, Scott Parker and Gareth Bale on the pitch, it’s always going to be tough to contain that threat.

In all honesty, it was comfortable for the visitors after they broke the deadlock and although they were happy to sit back and protect their 1-0 lead, they found a second through Jermain Defoe late on.

Times are changing at Molineux, though.

Wolves are no longer one of the smaller teams in the top flight.

They are by no means among the relegation favourites and anyone thinking they will get an easy ride against McCarthy’s side better think again.

Harry Redknapp feels the same as well.

“Wolves is a really difficult place to come now – they, alongside Stoke and West Brom, are the teams I think could really push on this season,” he said.
