Jay aims to grab striker role

Jay Bothroyd

JAY Bothroyd admits he is desperate to make the most of a rare pre-season in order to win the congested race for a striking berth at Wolves.

The enigmatic frontman greeted the latest striker signing in Stephen Elliott with a blistering display from the bench in last night's friendly win at Bray, scoring twice and setting up another in Wolves' 4-0 victory.

And he hopes the rewards of coming through a first proper pre-season for some time may help him secure one of those two striking roles.

"I'm looking to get one of those starting roles so I have to perform in the pre-season games," he said. "I haven't had a pre-season for about five years. Our fitness coach has been top drawer and though we're not 100 per cent yet we will be there by the time the season starts."

On Elliott's arrival he added: "We've got five forwards but that is good for the season ahead. It is nice to have a big squad."
