Mick McCarthy understands fans' anger

Mick McCarthy

MICK McCarthy fully endorsed the Wolves fans post-match tirade at their players warming-down at Cardiff– admitting he felt “embarrassed” by the team's display.

“It was an awful performance,” was the manager’s verdict on the 2-0 defeat.

“Some of the fans on the terraces afterwards were singing to the lads that it was a disgrace and I’m not going to disagree with that.

“One or two of the players were upset by the comments but that shouldn’t be the case.

“Terry Connor (coach) told them they should stay out there and listen.

“It’s not a lack of desire, I would never level that at the players, but it was as bad as we have been for a very long time.

“I feel sorry for the fans who have had to travel here to watch it.”

McCarthy started the game with an unfamiliar 4-3-3 formation, but after Wolves dreadful start conceding after just 84 seconds insists he’ll never know if it would have worked.

“We’ll never know whether that shape would have done anything because for the third time in four games we’ve conceded an early goal,” he added.

“From there we never even threatened to come back, I told the players we didn’t even scratch the surface.”
