Mick McCarthy: Forget Burnley, Scunthorpe is going to be tough

Mick McCarthy

WOLVES boss Mick McCarthy today warned Saturday’s win at Burnley will count for nothing when relegation-threatened Scunthorpe check in at Molineux.

The impressive 3-1 win at Turf Moor should serve to galvanise Wolves ahead of the nine-game run-in, and tomorrow’s home game with the Iron, one of their games in hand on teams above, offers the chance to move within one point of the play-offs.

But McCarthy is by no means getting carried away and knows Nigel Adkins’ men will be scrapping for their lives.

“We were never out of the play-off race but getting three points at Burnley makes a big difference, particularly as they are one of our rivals,” he said.

“I hope it sends out a message that we are still involved but we got to do it again tomorrow.

“We’ve done it away from home and now we’ve got to do it at Molineux.

”I don’t want 22,000 people turning up thinking that because we beat Burnley it’s a foregone conclusion.

”It will be a tough match and I hope everyone realises we need to be together and right on our game.”

The manager meanwhile insisted Wolves earned the luck which came their way on Saturday as defensive/goalkeeping errors from Burnley contributed to the second and third goals.

“We did have some luck but also played very well and you can't take anything away from us,” he explained.

”The first goal was terrific how it was conceived and finished.

”We had a bit of luck with the second but you earn that luck.“
