Mick McCarthy welcomes the Andy Keogh fan club

Andy Keogh

MICK McCarthy saluted the Wolves fans who got behind Andy Keogh and insists they got their rewards with the two goals which helped secure another potentially crucial point.

The missing of a first half chance by Keogh against QPR saw the familiar chants of “Freddy” go up from a section of the South Bank still viewing substitute Eastwood as the potential Molineux saviour.

But almost immediately another section of fans drowned them out by chanting Keogh’s name, to the delight both of the player and his manager.

“The players have discussed this in the dressing room,” said McCarthy.

“Keogh goes through, misses a decent chance, and the Freddy chant goes up.

“Freddy’s embarrassed by it but none of us can do anything about it.

“What it meant was ‘Get Keogh off and Get Freddy on’, I know that, you know that, Andy and Freddy know that.

“What benefit is that to us? None.

“But what I loved about it was the reaction from the other fans who responded straightaway and gave it ‘Keogh, Keogh’.

“What a difference that must have made to Keogh, and what a difference it has because he’s gone on to get us two goals and got us that equaliser.

“It’s a positive that the fans have praised Keogh and realised what he’s done for this club over the last 18 months.

“It does affect you as a player let me tell you because your confidence can go very quickly.

“I thought at 2-1 and 3-2 down the fans were remarkable - they’ve driven us on and it really was bloody-mindedness that we’re going to have to work for whatever we got.

“The response was terrific and that’s what I love to hear.”
