Gary Breen: Wolves fans have been great

Gary Breen

WOLVES skipper Gary Breen today insisted there can be no complaints about the moans and groans of the Molineux fans.

And the 34-year-old, whose future remains unclear as he is out of contract in the summer, revealed he would much rather be playing for a team with such a demanding fanbase than not.

“I can understand the fans’ frustrations because they have to put up with it every year,” Breen said after Wolves missed out on the play-offs.

“As a new player coming in last season, you look at Wolves from the outside and you think ‘why have they only played one season in the Premier League?’

“Something is not quite right.

“The fans are fantastic and they turn up in their numbers.

“At times they have been frustrated with the team but in general they took this team and what Mick (McCarthy) has tried to put together to their hearts.

“But when they were getting a bit grumpy, they were probably thinking ‘we’re going to have to endure another season of this’.

“I’m sure we’re paying for the sins of people before us.

“But on the whole the fans have been fantastic and it’s been a pleasure to play for the club and to lead the club.”

And Breen dismissed suggestions the Molineux expectation levels contributed to Wolves’ woes.

“The atmosphere shouldn’t make a difference because ultimately your aim is to play in the Premier League,” he added.

“So if you can’t handle a bit of grumbling and stuff it’s because first and foremost you’re not playing well enough.

“When you play well, this crowd is fantastic and I would rather play for a crowd that’s vocal when you’re doing great and when you’re not doing great.”
