Wayne Hennessey happy to fight for his Wolves place

Wayne Hennessey

WOLVES keeper Wayne Hennessey insists he will still be happy to stay and fight for his place at Molineux - even if he loses it to Matt Murray.

Hennessey has become one of the Championship's hot properties after an impressive season, attracting attention from a host of Premier League clubs, most notably Everton.

Murray is continuing his rehabilitation from injury, which ruled him out of all of the campaign, but has targeted a pre-season return that could trigger an almighty scrap for Wolves' goalkeeping jersey.

"If Matt is playing, I will help him and it will be the same if I'm playing," said Hennessey.

"There's competition all the time for the shirt.

"Matt is a fantastic lad, who I get on very well with, so it will be interesting to see what the gaffer does - whether he plays me or Matt.

"We'll find out in pre-season."

Hennessey admits he is more than happy to remain a Wolves player, despite all the interest.

"I'd like to think I'll be a Wolves player by the start of next season. I hope so," he added.

"I went in to see the gaffer at the end of the season and it was all positive, so we'll see what happens next season.

"So far I'm staying and if I've got a Wolves shirt on, I'll try my best for Wolves."

Wolves, meanwhile, have been linked with Hennessey's Welsh under-21 team-mates Chris Gunter and Sam Vokes, as well as Derby midfielder David Jones.

Manager Mick McCarthy has substantial funds to strengthen his squad over the summer.
