Mick McCarthy: Sam Vokes will be a star for Wolves

Sam Vokes

MICK McCarthy insists Sam Vokes is one for the present and not just the future after backing him to provide a physical edge to Wolves’ attack next season.

McCarthy is delighted with the acquisition of his only summer signing thus far, as 18-year-old Vokes opted for Molineux despite interest from the Premier League.

The Wolves boss believes the Welsh international knows he has more of a chance of regular football in the Championship, and will not be holding him back. I’m delighted with Sam Vokes, really thrilled,” said McCarthy.

“We watched him up against England under-21s when he was excellent and he then got himself into the senior Wales squad as well.

“He’ll be a player for us – don’t let anyone think because he’s 18 he’s one for the future. He’s a member of the squad now and trying to get in the team. Clubs were looking at him but no one really enquired or put the deal in and we did. From Sam’s point of view is that with the likes of Celtic, Newcastle and Villa would he actually go and play there?

“Or would it be a case of them sending him out on loan to a Championship club?

“Sam wants a steady progression and I think that is coming to us, one of the clubs at the top end of the Championship. That will be a test.”

McCarthy has been hankering for a target-man type presence among his clutch of strikers for some considerable time, but chose not to pursue Kevin Kyle after his loan spell last season.

Instead he swooped on Bournemouth for Vokes.

“He’s a good player, 6ft 2in and physical and good in the air,” added McCarthy.

“He holds the ball up ad has got good movement.”
