Mick McCarthy praise for 'usung heroes' Neil Collins and Stephen Ward

MICK McCarthy has picked out unsung pair Neil Collins and Stephen Ward as the “fabric” of everything he wants to build at Wolves.

The attacking players have hogged the headlines so far this season as goal-happy Wolves have sprung to the top of the Championship.

But McCarthy reckons Collins and Ward have also both shown their true worth by filling in capably to help out an injury-hit defence.

“Those two are the absolute fabric of what I stand for,” the manager said.

“I will say, ‘Neil, go and play left back’ or ‘Neil, go and play right back’ and it’s ‘no problem, gaffer’.

“He had a great game at Ipswich last week and what do I say to him? Go and play at left back at Rotherham’ – and he has a bad game. I bet he’s thinking ‘if he leaves me out after that...’ – well, there was never a chance.

“Wardy is not a fans’ favourite and got a bit of flak at Plymouth because he didn’t have the best of games. But he plays at left back against Forest and is brilliant.

“Anybody who gives those two lads stick gets absolute affront from me straight away because them and the likes of Karl Henry really stand out for me in terms of their attitude.

“Wardy’s left back performance against Forest was built purely and simply on attitude and a desire to play. It’s the same with Neil. I love them to bits because they are great guys.”
