Mick McCarthy not getting carried away

Mick McCarthy

MICK McCarthy has picked out Wolves’ early-season win at Ipswich as the result which has turned his team’s start from a good one into a very good one.

Wolves travelled to Charlton today in high spirits and top of the Championship.

But ten points from four games, although an excellent haul, is only marginally better than what McCarthy expected.

It was that 2-0 win over fellow promotion aspirants Ipswich at Portman Road that most pleased the ever-demanding boss.

“We are probably two points better off than I would have liked to have thought we’d have had so far,” the Wolves boss said.

“Going to Plymouth for the first game of the season was always going to be tough, but we should have won having played really well.

“On the other hand we could have lost, so we were happy to draw.

“But if we’re going to do anything, we should beat sides like Sheffield Wednesday and Nottingham Forest at home.

“I’m not knocking them at all – it’s just that it’s all about winning your home games.

“Ipswich away was the fantastic result.

“If we’d drawn at Plymouth and maybe now had seven points, there would still be a good feel about the place but it was the away victory at Ipswich, and the manner in which we played, that has made things look far different.

“I thought we had this in our locker last season as well.

“The difference now is we have finished off all the good football with goals.

“It has been a good start, that’s as far as I’ll go.

“There’s still 42 to play so I won’t be getting carried away.

”There will some team who have had a not-so-good start who will turn it around and do alright.”
