Mick McCarthy is still mixing it

Mick McCarthy

MICK McCarthy this week admitted is happy to face up to the challenges and dilemmas entailed in picking a team from a squad fuelled by intense competition.

The Wolves manager does not have the biggest squad in the Championship at his disposal.

But after the transfer window he has a few options. And that means that, with injuries and suspensions inevitably cropping up along the way, he will face tough decisions. Of who to pick and, more difficult, who to leave out.

It is all part of the job, insists McCarthy, who knows well that the bottom line is that, whatever decisions he makes regarding individuals, all that matters is results.

“I’ll make my own decisions and I can’t worry about what anyone else thinks afterwards,” the manager said. “My decision will only be right if we play well and the person that plays in a certain position does well and we get something out of the game.

“That’s my only vindication - if a player comes in and has a really exceptional game, and the team wins.

“Otherwise it’s a no-win situation. If I leave it and it doesn’t go right, I’m wrong for leaving it. If I change it and it doesn’t go right then I should never have changed a winning side.”
