Murray: It’s great to be back

MATT Murray is used to performing in front of crowds rather bigger than a paltry 266.

But that is how many spectators gathered at Nuneaton for their Birmingham Senior Cup tie with Wolves last Tuesday night – and Murray was delighted to be out there performing in front of them.

The highly-rated goalkeeper played 45 minutes of the tie – his first competitive action after more than a year our with a succession of nightmare injuries.

Murray has not played in the first team since May 2007 when Wolves won at Leicester in their 46th league game that term. He then suffered a broken shoulder in training the day before the first leg of the play-offs semi-final with Albion and, in the subsequent pre-season, sustained the cruciate ligament damage requiring surgery from which he is only now returning.

“You never really know with any injury until you get back into games but I’m really happy with the stage I’m at now,” Murray said. “I need to carry on working with the medical staff and doing my own stuff in the gym, which I know I’ll be doing for the rest of my career, and getting some football under my belt.

“The first hurdle is to get back match fit and playing games. The second is to try and challenge Wayne Hennessey and Carl Ikeme for places which is probably going to be much harder.”

“It is just great to be back out there playing behind a back four, talking to them and just being involved again.”
