Cup win counts for nothing in league, says Wolves boss McCarthy

believed deserved to go through to face Middlesbrough in the FA Cup fourth round.

“I was very pleased with the performance. I thought we played well and I thought we deserved the win,” he added.

“I thought it was a penalty and likewise I thought ours was a penalty on Saturday, but we didn’t get it – you get some, you don’t get some.

“Of course we were very fortunate because it was Richard Stearman and if he had been booked again then he would have been sent off.

‘‘The other controversy is that we missed seven or eight good chances as well.”

Goals from Andy Keogh and Sam Vokes secured the victory for Wolves – two strikers who have grown used to playing second fiddle to the in-form Sylvan Ebanks-Blake and Chris Iwelumo.

McCarthy was pleased with the goal-scoring duo’s contribution and he admits they’ve added to his selection headache.

“Sam and Andy are just unfortunate that the other two have been playing so well and scoring because they are both really good players,’’ he said.

“Sam is getting close to the first-team but I will have 11 difficult decisions to make on Saturday as usual.”
