Buccaneering days are over says Wolverhampton Wanderers' McCarthy

“If you look at Arsenal playing Manchester United and what was it – three seconds – and they had conceded a goal.

“We have done that to teams in this league but it will happen to us in the Premier League.

“We have a bit of pace in our team and the ability to catch teams on the break. It’s whether you leave yourselves open to it.

“We will surprise one or two and I have no doubt we will get a few slappings.”

But McCarthy insists he is not sending his team up to be cannon fodder.

“Don’t anyone think I believe we are going to be top dogs but we will be looking to upset a few and buck the trend like we have done in the past,’’ he added.

“Our quickest player is probably as quick as Man United’s quickest. It’s just that they have 22 of them.”

McCarthy also said he will spend the rest of the season watching Premier League matches with a view to adding top-flight experience to his squad.
