Wolves: Internationals 'won't walk into team', says Mick McCarthy

Wolves were without six key players last night including Michael Kightly, Chris Iwelumo, Sylvan Ebanks-Blake and Kevin Foley.

“That’s why we’ve got the squad and signed players,” added McCarthy.

“Substitutes’ jobs are to come on and do something and keep the others out if they can.

“Richard Stearman came in and had a great game at right-back and Dave Edwards came in and did really well playing behind the front man.

“They’ve put themselves up for selection with their performances.”

McCarthy insisted there has never been any drastic need for further additions in terms of new signings.

“There was never an emergency – I hope I haven’t given that impression.”

McCarthy took off Nenad Milijas last night and admitted tiredness was a factor.

“Milijas gives us quality but we do have quality in left-footed midfielders in Jones and Surman,” he said. “Technically, he’s very good. He’s a very good player but I didn’t think he was having the best of it in the second half.”
