Blackburn 3, Wolves 1: Elokobi and Zubar sleep in on a bad day at the office
Diouf scampered clear and, despite Wayne Hennessey’s best efforts, the ball squirmed between his legs.
It was by no means the five-goal hammering dished out at Ewood Park when they were last in town, but it was a demoralising defeat nonetheless.
And yet Wolves could have been two up after 19 minutes, only for Christophe Berra and Andy Keogh to miss two glorious chances.
Berra, in for injured skipper Jody Craddock, shot wide on the turn from barely eight yards after a woeful fumble by England goalkeeper Paul Robinson.
Then Keogh produced an “air shot” in the penalty area after doing the difficult bit in stepping inside marker Lars Jacobsen from Stearman’s through-ball.
The chances from thereon in were almost exclusively Rovers’. Hennessey saved one-handed from Morten Gamst Pedersen’s free-kick, then the Welsh keeper denied former Wolves midfielder Keith Andrews after more good work from Dunn.
Pedersen’s free-kick smacked against the post before half-time with Hennessey beaten and, despite an encouraging start to the second half, Wolves quickly found themselves dead and buried, with Roberts getting the faintest of touches off his chest to Gael Givet’s forceful header from Dunn’s.
It was 3-0 when Pedersen’s sublime diagonal ball saw Roberts beat the offside trap with Matt Hill and Berra nowhere.
Roberts took two touches and tried to dink the ball over Hennessey who managed to get a firm hand, but Roberts was able to nudge the ball goal-wards ahead of Hill, and an unmarked Dunn rammed the ball home.
Wolves produced a rare attack, with Kevin Doyle linking well with Keogh and forcing Robinson into a fingertip save. Then Keogh smashed wide with the goal at his mercy, before Stefan Maierhofer scored a consolation for Wolves with a couple of minutes remaining when he controlled Matt Jarvis’s corner and hit the ball into the roof of the net.
