We'll go all to beat Sunderland, says Wolves' Dave Edwards

David Edwards

DAVE Edwards says Wolves will go all out to win every tackle and every header at the Stadium of Light tomorrow in an attempt to make Mick McCarthy’s return to his former club a winning one.

The Wolves boss is set for an emotional return to the North-east, where he spent a rollercoaster three years in the managerial hot-seat.

McCarthy replaced Howard Wilkinson as Sunderland manager in March 2003 and after relegation from the top flight he led the Black Cats to the Premiership as champions.

But with the club 16 points from safety with only 10 games remaining, he was dismissed in March 2006.

“I’m sure the manager will put out a good, hard-working team which will do him justice,” Edwards said.

“The boys on the pitch will be trying to win every tackle and header for his cause.

“He’s got a point to prove up there. He did ever so well to get them promoted and it would be nice for him to go there and snatch three points off them.”

Edwards knows that three points on Sunday will turn a season of promise into one of real expectation.

“We’re going for back-to-back wins in the League, and if we get that, it will really push us up the table,” said the Welsh international, who scored his first goal of the season in the win over Fulham.

“If we could follow the win over Fulham with one at Sunderland, which is definitely achievable, then we’d be in a really good position for Portsmouth at home the following Saturday.
