Wolves: Mick McCarthy staying positive for 'relentless' ride in the Premier League

“We played the former Yugoslavia at home and beat them and then went to Croatia knowing we were playing Malta two or three days later.

“We set up with one up front and five across the middle and Suker scored in the 94th minute.

“I don’t think we’d had a shot on goal but we’d done our job. There was nothing worse than losing like that.”

Wolves similarly played with a five-man midfield at Manchester City this season, but their defensive approach was not by design and was rectified at half-time with the addition of a second striker in Kevin Doyle.

“We got an absolute slapping with one up front for 45 minutes at Manchester City,” McCarthy recalls.

“We ended up getting pinned back because their full-backs pushed on and they were playing around us.

“I just feel that we are better equipped with 4-4-2.”

n Sam Vokes appears set to sign for Leeds on loan and could make his debut against Norwich on Monday.
