Wolves: Sylvan gets Iwelumo’s backing to score again

CHRIS Iwelumo has backed Sylvan Ebanks-Blake to end his top flight goal drought.

The 23-year-old Wolves striker entered the Premier League with high hopes after 48 Championship goals in the last two seasons.

But an opening day hamstring injury and lack of goals has led to brittle confidence.

“I don’t think it’s affected him at all,” said the fit-again Scottish international.

“Myself and him had a good chat the other day and I’ve told him it will come.

“He’s just got to keep doing the right things.

“He’s come back a different player.

‘‘He’s an out-and-out goalscorer, but he’s got everything and he’s an all-round centre-forward.

“He reads the game well and he’s a fantastic technician with the ball.

“The character he is, he knows what he has to do and it won’t hinder him in any way that he hasn’t scored yet.

“He had a few half chances at Everton and the keeper made a save and one got deflected away.

“I don’t think he or the lads are worried about it.

“Everyone knows that he’ll get one go in off his backside or whatever and he’ll kick on.”

Iwelumo could taste his first senior action of the season against Villa this afternoon after being sidelined for six months with knee ligament damage and then a broken foot.

He admits he is ready to put his head in inside the Wolves penalty area as well as Villa’s.

“There’s more to my game than just attack, attack, attack,” he said.

“There’s a defensive obligation I take on board as well so the gaffer is aware of their threat with James Collins and Richard Dunne, players who are great at attacking balls at set-pieces.

“We’ve been working long and hard at defending set-pieces.

“If someone’s not ‘at it’, you’re going to get punished at this level.

‘‘You’ve just got to make sure everyone is on their game, especially against Villa, who have won a lot of points from set-pieces.”
