MICK McCarthy has warned Blues that Kevin Doyle will “be even better” for being left out at Chelsea.
The Republic of Ireland striker was overlooked against his will at Stamford Bridge but McCarthy is now looking for his record signing to put both Blues and Bolton to the sword.
“Doyle would have wanted to have played on Saturday. I did not let him play,” said the Wolves boss, who got wind that Doyle was doing a TV interview.
“Apparently, there was some suggestion that poor old Doyle couldn’t play on Saturday and yet was okay to work on the settee appearing on TV on Sunday.
“The truth is I pulled him out of the game because I want him to play the next two games.
“There’s every chance when you have just played 120 minutes, as I said on Saturday, Nicolas Anelka isn’t quite going to have to run around as much as Doyle would have had to.
“If I’d have played him after he’d played 120 minutes in midweek and then he’d have got a little hamstring or calf strain, and we still get beat 4-0, that would have been completely and utterly ridiculous.
“It was never going to happen, so that was my decision.
“He wants to play – he would have liked to have done on Saturday to get it out of his system.
“But I’m not so sure being on the pitch and chasing would have got anything out of his system, except get more knackered than he already was.”
Doyle is now a certain fixture up front on Sunday.
“He’s fine. He wants to play. I’ve no worries about him,’’ added McCarthy.
“He’s a top player. And do you know what? He will be better for missing that game on Saturday.
