Why Craddock believes fringe players key to Wolves survival

JODY Craddock insists the key to Wolves’ success this season will not necessarily be the 11 players who face Blues.

Jody Craddock stands dejected after his own goal gives Arsenal their second goal of the game.

The veteran defender has pinpointed the club’s ability to call on fringe players as a crucial factor in their Premier League survival.

Mick McCarthy gave a number of senior players 90 minutes for the reserves in midweek as he looked at the possibility of making changes for tomorrow’s derby.

Craddock’s recent performances have been impressive enough, even though his mis-kick did lead to Chelsea’s opener last weekend, but he knows that Michael Mancienne is itching for a recall.

“The players trying to get into the team are still supportive of those who are playing and that’s massively important,” Craddock said.

“We’ve got a big squad which is needed at this level particularly when you pick up injuries and we know that at any time someone can step in and do a decent job.

“That’s good to know from the gaffer’s point of view, that if someone gets injured or loses their form someone else can come straight in.

“It’s about being patient on the sidelines for any of us when we are not in the team.

“I had to wait my turn after getting injured and I’m sure Kevin (Foley) and the other lads trying to get in will be the same.

“They all train hard and go about things in the right way because they know that their time will come around again.

“Then it’s a case of making sure you take that chance when it comes along.”

Craddock admits that he is playing as well as ever at 34 as he attempts to win a new contract.

“I think I’m better – I’m older but more experienced which helps me massively on the pitch against these top players,” he added.

“That’s what age brings you. I don’t think I’m as quick as I used to be, but I still feel sharp and quick.

“I don’t think I’ve been caught out for pace much this season even though I’ve come up against some seriously fast players such as Gabby Agbonlahor. It’s about being in the right place at the right time.”
