Wolves boss ready to Steven Fletcher bids in transfer window

MICK McCarthy believes Steven Fletcher’s stunning strike rate will not allow the Scottish striker to slip under the radar for much longer.

Fletcher continued his habit of netting a goal every one and-a-half games with his sixth of the season at Old Trafford.

McCarthy says the former Burnley striker’s relatively low profile may be partly explained by his low-key dealing with the media.

“If you ask people who have been giving me the stats all week I think it was 15 goals in 22 starts,” he said.

“It’s now 16 in 23 which is pretty good going by anyone’s standards.

“Maybe his profile is something to do with this, his personality as well, because he doesn’t court publicity.

“Ultimately, if you score as many goals as he is doing then it will find you, won’t it?

“He’s a terrific player, it’s just about keeping him fit all the time.”

Another player to exit a difficult afternoon at United with his reputation enhanced was Matt Jarvis, who the boss described as “excellent all afternoon”.

“He put in a fantastic performance and showed everybody he is back to his best now,” said McCarthy.

“The difference is that we only got one goal off his outstanding performance and United got four off theirs.

“I just wonder why it should be expected that a player like Matt Jarvis, who has done wonderfully well since coming from Gillingham for £600,000 and got in the England team, should just be able to do it week-in, week-out.
