Wolves sign Sebastien Bassong as leaky defence creaks against Liverpool

Mick McCarthy

MICK McCarthy accepts that the fingers of blame will be pointed at him after last night’s 3-0 home defeat to Liverpool.

McCarthy’s job was the subject of speculation when it was falsely reported he could have lost his position following the 3-2 loss to Villa and he expects more rumours to now follow.

“After the last home game there were huge rumours going round that I wasn’t going to be here the day after, so I can’t imagine there’ll be any less than there were then,” he said.

Wolves now face a massive double-header with QPR and Albion and McCarthy understood the anger of the fans.

“I fully understand that,” he said of the boos at the final whistle.

“Watching that second half is unacceptable for me or anybody else. All I would say is the lads are hurting as well. There’s none of them gone out there and not tried.

“We have been beaten by a considerably better side who have just beaten Manchester City and Manchester United. And if you give them goals it is going to be hard work to beat them, isn’t it?

“But I understand people’s reactions, of course I do.

“We’ve got to defend better. There’s no point looking elsewhere all the time and pointing fingers, looking for people to blame.

“They’ll be pointing fingers at me to blame, I understand that, but in terms of defenders we’ve got to do better. We’ve got no mugs in the place. We’ve got to do better.”

And to that end McCarthy delved into the deadline-day transfer market to draft in Spurs’ Sebastien Bassong on loan for the rest of the season.

The Wolves boss had been keen to land the 25-year-old Cameroon defender having pursued him throughout January.
