On trend: Survive the summer by layering up

THE great British summer is enough to confuse even the most hardened fashionista.

One minute it’s barbecue weather and we can pull on the shorts and spaghetti straps – the next it’s barely above 10C and we’re reaching for the woollies.

So how can you plan a wardrobe that can take you from one extreme to the next in just a matter of days? Simple – layers.

Layering your clothes means you can shed the excess when the temperatures hot up or pile on a few more items when it cools.

Here’s a few favourite items that will see you through the next couple of months – whatever the weather.

1: This embroidered cardigan from Matalan (£18) has a vintage feel and could just have easily been picked up in a favourite flea market or retro clothing store.

2: This ditzy print top for £35 from White Stuff can be worn with a long-sleeved top or on its own.

3: Add a splash of colour to your summer clothes with this bright patterned scarf for £39 from House of Fraser.

4: Cream linen trousers are a real must-have for the season – channel your inner preppy with a white shirt or T-shirt and navy blazer. These, from Jane Norman, cost £38.
