Create a stylish retreat in your garden

THIS is your space so you let your taste rule and give it personality, whether you want a pretty, feminine sanctuary or a functional, 'get down to business' work space.

Judith says: "For a prettier effect, paint the walls a pale colour - French grey, white or mid blue. Certain paint ranges offer exterior paints in a range of attractive muted and historical colours.

"It can be fun to furnish a shed. Use light, easy furniture that can be removed for storage in winter, or weather-resistant garden furniture."

She recommends a casual mix of repainted junk finds and rattan pieces. "Include maybe a reclining chair, side table and even a hurricane lamp for evening sojourns. But try to pick weather-resistant garden furniture, which can survive damp conditions."

The Pier, Ikea and John Lewis are great sources for practical furniture and hard-wearing fabrics.

Treat your new sanctuary to finishing touches. Companies such as Garden Trading offer everything from bunting and baskets to replica cafe signs and deckchairs. Cath Kidston is a perfect source for creature comforts such as gaily-coloured floor cushions at £35 each and blue or red hurricane lamps at £16.

Cabbages & Roses's vintage style fabrics and accessories are ideal for a chic, feminine retreat.
