Xmas sharing makes plenty of work for Dan
I FEEL like Charlie in the Chocolate Factory.
At one end of the room, huge tubs of country fudge, caramel velvet and mini bars of Cadbury Dairy Milk are waiting to be tipped into empty blue tins with a bright red rose on the top.
At the other, those very same tins are pouring off the production line, filled, sealed and ready for the shops.
Surely working in a chocolate factory is most people’s idea of a dream job?
Certainly production line manager, Daniel Scott, seems more than happy in his work. The facts and figures roll off his tongue.
He says: “When I first came into this are we were doing something like 14 tins a minute.
“Today, we’re producing tins of Roses at the rate of 45 a minute – that’s more than 45,000 a day.
“The chocolates are tipped into the machines manually and are then weighed to make sure the right number of individual chocolates goes into every tin.
“We carry out spot checks throughout the day to make sure there are no hitches.
“There are 12 different flavours of chocolate in a tin of Roses at the moment but that can change at any time.
“It’s up to people in other departments to make those sort of decisions. We just make sure every tin is ready to be opened and enjoyed.”
Daniel admits that even before he joined the company more than a decade ago, Roses were part of his own family’s Christmas tradition.
He says: “I think when you were a kid, having a big tin of chocolates to pass round on Christmas Day was all part of the celebrations.
“The wonderful thing about Roses is that there’s a flavour in there for everyone and there’s something very festive about being together and sharing.”
If this year has been busy, then already Daniel is predicting an even tougher year next year.
He says: “Year on year we are having to produce more and more chocolates to meet demand.
“The sales team are banging on our door to say they need us to deliver ever greater numbers and we are exceeding everyone’s expectations in doing that. That can only be good news for Cadbury and for our customers.”
