Fashion: Help us! We need some fashion relief

Comic Relief is back! Iconic Midland fashion designer Vivienne Westwood has designed a range of limited edition T-shirts for Red Nose Day taking place on Friday. To mark the occasion, we teamed up with TV celebrity stylist Mark Heyes to give two readers a fabulous makeover at the newly refurbished TK Maxx store in Birmingham's Bullring.

JO HARBORD, aged 37, suffered gesticular diabetes when she was pregnant and, as a result, piled on six stone.

“I went from being just eight stone to being more than 14 stone when I was pregnant,” says Jo, who lives in Kingstanding with her husband Dave, who works in property maintenance, and their three children Daniel, 15, Jessica, 12, and Jenna, six.

“I remained active throughout my pregnancy, still taking dance classes three nights a week, but I still piled on the pounds.

“I did manage to go back to nine stone but on the day I reached my goal, I took a pregnancy test and discovered I was pregnant with my daughter Jessica.

“I didn’t have diabetes during my second pregnancy but I did when I was pregnant with my third child Jenna.

“I’m a size 16 now having just lost a stone. My mum has diabetes and I’ve been warned that having suffered from gesticular diabetes I’m likely to get diabetes myself by the time I’m 40 if I don’t lose weight.

“That’s three years away and it’s giving me a massive inspiration to shift the pounds.”

Full-time mum Jo, whose daughter Jessica suffers from ME, also volunteers for ChildLine.

“I would describe my style as ‘mumsy.’ I wear black combats, a black hoody and trainers every day. I have six pairs of the same combats. Before I had the children I used to follow all the latest styles and wear much tighter-fitting clothing but I’ve lost my confidence.

“I’m hoping the makeover will give me a bit more confidence in myself.

“I might try to wear more colour but at the moment I just hide myself in black because I don’t want to stand out.

“I think it will have quite an impact on me as a person to change the way I dress.

“I see the other mums doing the school run and I sometimes wonder if my kids wish I was a bit more glamorous like them.”
