Revlon Nail Enamel in All Fired Up (14.7ml, £6.29)

A cherry red, this is a wearable colour for all ages and for day and evening. Lasts reasonably well with small chips appearing by the third day.

Fearne Turquoise Nail Varnish (9ml, £5.50)

Funky packaging and bright colours means Fearne Cotton’s products know their teen market. This colour wouldn’t be to everyone’s taste but it lasts a few days and certainly gets noticed.

Estee Lauder Pure Color Nail Lacquer in Tempting Melon (9ml, £14)

A peachy apricot, this is a shade which is strong in colour but not too zany. It is a little thin and the most expensive but it does last the longest.

Illamasqua Nail Varnish in Gamma (15ml. £13.50)

Hot orange, this day-glo colour is bright, bright, bright. It is a little thin on application but has reasonable longevity with the first chips showing at three days.

Orly Nail Varnish in Hottie (5.4ml, £5)

This neon fuchsia is a fun shade but it does not last long with chips appearing within 24 hours and the entire nail needing to redone in a couple of days.
