WIN DVD about true story of a brave girl

ONE of the most important and harrowing tales of life during the Second World War is brought to our television screens this month, in the powerful, new BBC1 drama The Diary of Anne Frank.

The 5x30-minute mini-series will be shown over consecutive nights on BBC1, from January 5-9, ahead of Holocaust Memorial Day on January 27.

The drama will also be available to own on DVD from January 12 from Contender Home Entertainment.

Ellie Kendrick stars as Anne Frank, supported by Tamsin Greig, Iain Glen, Lesley Sharpe, Ron Cook and Felicity Jones.

The diary, which was given to Anne on her 13th birthday, documents her life from 1942 until 1944, and gives a unique account of her experiences hiding under Nazi terror in World War Two.

Anne was a Jewish girl born in the city of Frankfurt in Germany. She and her family moved to Amsterdam in 1933, after the Nazis gained power in Germany, and went into hiding in 1942, in hidden rooms of her Father Otto Frank’s office building, which became known in her diary as the Secret Annex.

After two years of living in this secret apartment with four other Dutch Jews, the group was betrayed and transported to concentration camps. Anne died of Typhus in the camp, days after her sister, Margot Frank, died.

Her father Otto, the only survivor of the group, returned to Amsterdam after the war to find that her diary had been saved, and his efforts led to its publication in 1947.

The DVD creates a timeless account of Anne Frank’s life, and includes an exclusive interview with Anne’s cousin Buddy Elias, recorded especially for the release.
