Your Communities: Latest winners to be revealed
IT’S a hectic time for the Letisha and Charlene Education Awards Scheme, because later this week we’ll be unveiling our latest 11 award winners.
They will be presented with awards in an event at the St George’s Community Hub in Newtown, on Friday.
The presentation will coincide with the fourth anniversary of the beautiful peace garden there in memory of Letisha and Charlene.
Regular readers of the Birmingham Mail will know from its news coverage that we recently invited new applications for awards.
Almost 40 people applied for awards and 16 were shortlisted and interviewed recently.
Eleven were selected as award winners and will share in laptops and cash totalling £3,600.
I only wish we had more to give away because the applications and interviews underlined to us what we already know – that there are many very needy people who deserve a break.
But, like most charities, we have found the going tough recently with the credit crunch and recession impacting on the support we get.
It was very tough to whittle down the applicants to the final 11, but we feel we have made the right choices for the right reasons.
We’ll be introducing the new winners to Birmingham Mail readers in extensive coverage following the presentation.
