IT SEEMED like a good idea to try an Ed’s Easy Diner breakfast.
The new American-style eatery at Selfridges in the Bullring looks striking with its classic 50s’ styling and fun, red seats which are surprisingly comfy.
But after we sat down at 11.30am following a Remembrance service, our friendly waitress told us: “Breakfast ended at 11am.”
How so? Selfridges’ website says the store’s Sunday hours are from 11am and Ed’s own website ignores opening times.
It turns out that Ed’s is open from 9am on Sunday even though Selfridges isn’t.
This meant our meal became an early lunch, with our three children restricted to a non-breakfast menu with junior burger (£4.35), ‘chicken tenders’ (£4.35) and a ‘dry dog’ (£5.45).
My wife, Collette, opted for a ‘chicken classic combo’ (£8.45), while I tried the all-day ‘just outa bed breakfast’ for £5.75, but such was the delay waiting for the meals to arrive I thought we might end up with supper.
Meanwhile, other customers were queuing so disconcertingly close we began to feel like we were creatures in a zoo.
Our drinks came relatively quickly – three shakes for the nippers (£1.90 each) and a refillable filter coffee for Mrs Y (£1.80). My tea (£1.80) was so strong and bitter I didn’t need to know if it was refillable.
