SCORES of people, shocked by the murders of a couple in their quiet Birmingham community, were expected at a meeting tonight to discuss what they could do to help police.
Such has been the revulsion at the brutal deaths of grandparents Avtar Kolar and his wife Carole, the public have been galvanised behind the police.
And a new-found community spirit has emerged to help fight crime. But is has not surpassed the outpouring of public grief for a couple described as “the sweetest, kindest people” anyone could ever meet.
The bodies of Avtar, aged 62, and 58-year-old Carole were found inside their Handsworth Wood home eight days ago by their son Jason, a serving officer with West Midlands Police.
In the dark shadow of the Friary Road murder scene, scores of floral tributes – their colourful arrangements gleaming in the sun – lay in testament to the way the couple touched people.

In the days following the tragedy, as the detailed forensic work continued inside the property, friends, relatives and police officers, many visibly overcome with emotion, arrived to lay their tributes.
One, from Dr Muhammad Ansar Khan, read: “It has really been a shocking blow to our community and a big blow and terrible loss to the family of the two beautiful people we have lost in this terrible tragedy.
“While we all mourn their untimely death, my family and myself join to share your grief on this huge loss.”
Another read: “How could anyone do such a thing to a loving and wonderful couple? We are heartbroken.”
Another read: “You lit up our lives and I don’t know how we will go on without you.”
Another card, left by some of the couple’s grandchildren, said: “Nanny, we love you to the moon and back.
“Our life will never be complete again."
“We adore you and love you forever."
