Customer data 'must be secure'

CAR dealers need to put systems in place to protect any customer data they hold and be aware of their responsibilities under the Data Protection Act, according to the Retail Motor Industry's National Franchised Dealers Association.

Sue Robinson, NFDA director, says: "Dealers will routinely hold customer bank and credit card details and it is important that this information is protected.

"The loss of the personal details of 25 million people by HM Revenue and Customs on discs has highlighted the importance of protecting sensitive information and the consequences if a mistake is made."
