Behind the badge: Police effectively manage offenders in the community

THE work to tackle sex offenders extends far beyond convictions at court.

Under Multi-Agency Public Protection Arrangements, perverts face continued monitoring even once they are released back into the community.

Latest figures revealed 1,895 registered sex offenders were living in the West Midlands.

Of those, 808 were in Birmingham, 124 in Solihull and 773 in the Black Country. A total of 22 were considered to pose the highest risk to the community and faced some of the toughest controls to prevent them re-offending.

Each faced continuous monitoring by a team of sex offender managers and their cases were constantly reviewed by a panel of experts.

Det Insp Heather McCamley, who heads West Midlands Police’s MAPPA support team, said: “We look at everything to decide the most effective way of dealing with that person and the risk they pose to protect the community.”
