'I lived on the travel chaos volcano' - Birmingham surveyor spent time on Icelandic mountain

IT might have scuppered thousands of holiday plans for but, for a Birmingham surveyor, the Icelandic ash cloud brought back fond memories.

Sadie Janes, 26, spent 12 days in a hut on the slopes of volcano Eyjafjallajoekull while a geography student at Cambridge University.

Now working in commercial development for Savills in Birmingham, Ms Janes said she was excited to see the topic of her research in the news. “I was quite excited because I know it pretty well,” she said. “I stayed in a hut and would go on walks where the snow would come up to your chest.”

During her research Ms Janes put forward the theory the Eyjafjallajoekull volcano system overlaps with the neighbouring and more explosive Katla volcano. And she said Katla could erupt in response to the first.
