Fraud probe candidate's early exit

Mohammed Khan

THE Liberal Democrat candidate at the centre of a postal vote fraud allegation did not hang around to hear he had lost his bid for a council seat.

Mohammed Khan, who was last week arrested on suspicion of trying to defraud the election process before being bailed, was battling for the inner city seat of Nechells.

But half an hour into the two hour count he realised a massive defeat was in store and made himself scarce.

A Liberal Democrat colleague said: "He is not well and has gone home - we have no comment."

Fellow Nechells Coun Tahir Ali called for the investigation into postal vote discrepancies to continue and for action to be taken if Mr Khan is found guilty.

He said: "Just because the candidate lost he should not be allowed to get away it if the allegations are proven."

The victor by a margin of 1,336 votes was Labour's Chauhdry Rashid who claimed his rival had been hurt by the allegations.
