UB40 star's support for HP campaign

Robin Campbell with the Mail's Save Our Sauce bottle

UB40's Robin Campbell today added his support to the Birmingham Mail's Save Our Sauce campaign.

The guitarist with the chart-topping Birmingham band is a fan of the brown sauce and would be devastated to see the factory move abroad.

"I've grown up on HP sauce and it's dreadful to hear about the Birmingham workers losing their jobs," he said.

"It's the same as Rover. I worked at British Leyland and thank God I got out before it collapsed.

"Unfortunately, it seems inevitable as long as labour costs are cheaper in other countries and the only thought is for profit rather than community."

Robin, who is touring Britain with UB40 during the summer, reckoned the outlook is bleak for other UK companies.

"As long as the bottom line is profit for shareholders we're in danger of losing our manufacturing industry," he said.

"I've seen so many closures it breaks my heart." n Contact our SOS - Save Our Sauce - reporter Lee Kenny on 0121 234 5651 to pledge support and tell us your HP sauce memories and stories.
