Hospital staff going quackers over brood

The family of ducks who have moved in at Heartlands hospital

BIRMINGHAM hospital workers are getting their feathers in a flap over a mother duck who has nestled down and given birth outside one of the wards.

The duck and her brood of 14 are getting a bird's-eye view of Heartlands Hospital in Bordesley Green.

Hospital secretaries discovered the ducklings had hatched under a tree outside the outpatient department on Wednesday.

RSPCA officers said that although it was an unusual spot to pick to give birth, the ducks will eventually fly off to a new home when they are ready.

Secretary Louise Andrews, one of the group that discovered the ducklings, said: "They have been swimming in the paddling pool and eating the food. I could watch them all day tumbling about in the pool."

The birds are settling into their new home in a courtyard complete with paddling pool and lots of food provided by their hospital carers.
