Police step up patrols over booze crime

EXTRA police patrols are being put on around Birmingham city centre over the coming month to tackle booze-fuelled crime.

Police traditionally see an rise in alcohol-related disorder during the summer months because the weather is warmer.

To head off the seasonal peak, police will today launch the latest Bsafe operation.

The operation will involve high visibility police patrols to provide reassurance. Mobile police caravans will be located in the city's entertainment areas where officers will be offering advice on keeping safe.

Acting Supt Keith Fraser, from Steelhouse Lane police, said: "We encourage people to come to the city and enjoy a night out and we simply remind people to enjoy themselves safely.

Officers will have dispersal powers in the Broad Street, Hurt Street and Arcadian areas of the city centre and will be issuing £60 fixed penalty notices.
