City drugs pair jailed in Dubai

TWO Birmingham men will serve four years in a Dubai prison after they were convicted of drugs offences, the Foreign and Commonwealth office has confirmed.

The pair, from Small Heath, were arrested in late August in the United Arab Emirates city.

One of the men who will serve four years is Islam Mohammed, aged 26, from Mansel Road.

Another man, who has not been named but is also said to be from Small Heath, has been sentenced to a prison sentence of the same length, the Foreign Office confirmed.

A spokesman said: "They were arrested in Dubai in the late hours of August 27 or early hours of August 28.

"They were convicted of drugs offences in Dubai and sentenced to four years in prison."

Both men were visited by British Consulate officials after their arrest in August.

According to the Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing for Dubai, nearly 700,000 people from the United Kingdom travelled to Dubai in 2005, which is popular with the rich and famous.

Most visitors to the country go to experience the five-star resorts, beaches, shop and soak up the liberal and cosmopolitan atmosphere.

According to the Foreign and Commonwealth office website, the UAE has a relatively good human rights record.
