Santas sprint round park for charity

Santas Mary Touhy, left, Tania Stretton, Elaine Woodall, Diane Sheard, Julie Luckman and Val Lucas.

SANTA might be busy making sure lots of childrens' stockings will be filled with goodies this Christmas.

But he left his trusty elves, sleigh and reindeers at home yesterday to limber up for another good cause.

Or rather 250 men and women dressed in Santa suits did. They sprinted one kilometre around the lake in Cannon Hill Park in Edgbaston to raise money for the British Heart Foundation's annual Hearts First Santa Dash.

Some of the more energetic Santas managed to complete six laps during the event while others took the easier option and decided to stroll the course.

Children wearing fancy dress joined in the fun and enjoyed entertainment such as face painting.

Event organiser the British Heart Foundation said the £10,000 raised on the day would go towards the £42,000 needed each year for the next three years to fund a paediatric cardiac liaison nurse at Birmingham Children's Hospital.

Louise McCathie, from the charity, added: "It was a fantastic event and everybody really got into the Christmas atmosphere.".
