Plea over cost of van repairs

Aylish Sherlock

A COUPLE with a seriously ill daughter today appealed for help to pay for repairs to a specially-equipped van which they need for her to travel in.

Teresa and Jim Sherlock's daughter Aylish, aged 19, has brain damage and needs constant care.

The family's Renault van, which has had more than £40,000 worth of adaptations for Aylish's medical equipment, is her only way of travelling in comfort.

The van includes a resuscitation kit, clamping wheels for Aylish's wheelchair, aspirators and oxygen pumps.

But it broke down recently and Aylish's parents - who are both her full-time carers - face a bill of £4,890 for the repairs and they don't have the money.

Jim said: "We were just gobsmacked when we got the bill. We do not have that kind of money. The van needs a new engine and it will cost almost £5,000 to fix."

Aylish fell ill eight months after being born when she developed a rare disease that left her brain damaged. She later suffered at least six heart attacks.

Jim, of Yardley, said: "When she developed the disease the doctors gave her a 100 per cent mortality rate.

"We have never been filled with any hope for her survival yet she is a remarkable girl and she has fought for life.

"She is a blessing to us and I can't think of life without her. It is a struggle for her at the moment and we will do all we can to make sure she is comfortable."

She was diagnosed with myocarditis and admitted to Heartlands Hospital after developing acute pneumonia in January. During the time she was in hospital the specially adapted van broke down.

Since then it has been off the road and it has been difficult for Aylish to get to weekly hydrotherapy sessions or her regular hospital appointments.

Anyone wishing to donate should do so through the Acocks Green Lions Club, Tony Downs, 98 Westley Road, Acocks Green, Birmingham, B27 7UH or by calling 0121 708 2115.
