Man's body found in canal

POLICE were today continuing their investigations into the death of a man whose body was found floating in a canal in Birmingham.

A passer-by walking along the towpath of the Birmingham & Fazeley Canal, in the city centre, made the grim discovery yesterday.

The waterway was closed in both directions at a series of locks off Fleet Street, near to Summer Row, after the alarm was raised shortly after 9.45am.

A team of specialist officers was drafted in to recover the man's body so it could be taken away for further tests.

A police spokesman said a post-mortem examination would be carried out in due course to determine the cause of the man's death which was being treated as suspicious pending the results of tests.

The Birmingham coroner has also been informed.

The canal was re-opened shortly before 1pm.
