Gridlock after lorry load flips

MOTORISTS faced chaos today after police were forced to shut a major road when a lorry shed its load.

The vehicle was travelling out of Birmingham along the A38 (M) Aston Expressway when its trailer carrying a digger flipped over shortly after 9am today.

Traffic police closed the out-of-city carriageway between Dartmouth Circus, Newtown, and the M6 at Spaghetti Junction.

Drivers travelling through Birmingham city centre were caught in gridlock as the traffic snaked back along the A38 into the tunnels.

All three lanes were cordoned off for around 90 minutes as officers helped to recover the digger.

Central Motorway Police Group said no one was injured in the incident. The road was re-opened at about 10.30am.
