Workman in scaffolding plunge horror

A WORKMAN plunged up to 50ft from the top of scaffolding in Birmingham city centre this afternoon.

The man was working on the former Deloitte building in Colmore Row when the accident happened at around 2pm.

Eye witnesses say he was in a cradle on the outside of a tower block when he fell. Eye witnesses said the door to it was swinging open following the accident.

Police cordoned off the pavement around the Great Western Arcade opposite Snow Hill Station.

Alex Jackson, a 26-year-old sales manager at the Thistle Hotel, said: "I walked past and he was lying on the floor face down, motionless.

"He had fallen more than 10 storeys and he had obviously seriously injured. It's terrible. "

It took around 30 minutes for emergency services to stabilise the scene before he could be lifted on a stretcher and taken to hospital. Details of the workman and his condition are not yet known.

An investigation into the cause of the accident is now underway.
