Fall in assaults on police officers

ALMOST 800 West Midlands police officers and staff were assaulted in the last year, new figures show.

A total of 707 bobbies were attacked while carrying out their duties in the 12 months to the end of March this year, a drop from 870 the year before.

West Midlands Police also recorded 15 assaults on specials and 38 on members of police staff.

A report before the West Midlands Police Authority Personnel Committee said the total number of assaults on employees had fallen 35 per cent in the past three years.

The figures come two days after a police motorcyclist was injured after crashing off his bike while trying to stop a car in the Hill Top area of West Bromwich on Wednesday.

An 18-year-old man was arrested and bailed in connection with the incident.

Meanwhile, the number of accidents involved police employees fell from 1,023 in the financial year 2005/06 to 993 in the same period last year.
