Eid-goers singing in the rain

THERE might have been grey skies and rain overhead but nothing could dampen the spirits of visitors to this year's Eid Mela.

Thousands of people poured into Cannon Hill Park to sample the best Birmingham has to offer in Muslim culture.

Families were spoilt for choice as they wandered amongst the countless stalls selling everything from South Asian clothes, toys, books and a range of enticing freshly cooked food.

Women queued to have their their hands painted with mendhi or henna while children enjoyed the funfairs rides and games at the park yesterday.

They also enjoyed the singing, cooking and crafts in the women's only tent where Ulfah Arts, an all female Muslim band, kept them entertained.

Naz Koser, from Ulfah Arts, said: "We had performances on stage and showcased new talent too.

"This was the first time we had a marquee and we were delighted to be here. Women chilled out and enjoy themselves here."

The National Mela, supported by the FA and football academies, proved popular as local players battled it out on the rain.

Lawrence Target, director of the cup, said: "We were a bit low on players because of the date change and weather, but we've got good numbers for next year.

"We are taking 16 players to play with Birmingham City football academy. The winners from here will go on to to the finals at the Edinburgh Mela on September 1 and 2."

One of the biggest draws this year was undoubtedly the music programme. For the first time Islamic artists showed how mainstream music could be partnered with nasheed artists.

Artists such as Shaam, R.D.B., B21 and Naseebo Lal entertained the crowds huddled under umbrellas.

Father-of-nine Mohammed Akbar, 45, from Aston, was one of many gathered near the stage with his four-year-old son Humaad. The takeaway worker said: "I really enjoyed it. I let my children wander as I listened to religious music."
