Bullring fishmonger inspires community

GOLDEN hearted fishmonger Dave McLean is inspiring an entire Birmingham community to help youngsters struggling in poverty on the other side of the world.

The Bullring markets stall worker was so moved by what he saw when he went out to do some voluntary work in the African state of Malawi that he has galvanised youngsters on the Castle Vale estate into doing some fund-raising.

Now more than 40 young people from the age of six to 24 have joined forces to stage their own two-night variety show this Saturday and Sunday at St Cuthbert's Church in St Cuthbert's Place.

The two-and-a-half hour show, which they are calling The Star Factor, will include up to 19 acts, including dance groups and musical numbers.

"I went out to Malawi as a volunteer with the church about two years ago," said Dave, who works on John Barlow's fish stall in the Bullring market.

"I found the plight of the people out there so moving. They have nothing compared to us in the western world, yet they want to share everything with you. We were often moved to tears by their wonderful spirit even though we couldn't understand their language.

"When it got out locally about what we'd experienced, everyone wanted to help, especially the local youngsters. There's been a fantastic community spirit. We said we'd split the group up into younger children and older ones but everyone said they enjoyed working on the show together."

Since his visit Dave has also inspired the rest of his family to help out, including his 18-year-old trainee chef son Luke, the show's director, who has also set up a small cafe at the church to raise funds.

Dave's eight-year-old daughter Ellie-May is also taking part in the show, while wife Diane works behind the scenes keeping everyone in order.

They are hoping to raise between £400 and £500 from the show, which starts at 7pm on both nights. Tickets are available on the door at £3 and £2 concessions. The church's number is 0121 747 4041.
