Warning after burning paper pushed into Northfield home

FIREFIGHTERS today warned youths about the potentially-deadly consequences of playing with fire after yobs pushed lit paper through the letterbox of a Birmingham home.

Crews were called to Vinnal Grove, Northfield, at around 8.30pm yesterday after the terrified occupants of the house raised the alarm.

Crew Commander Paul Smith, of Northfield fire station, said: "This had the potential to be a life-threatening situation. Fortunately the burning paper extinguished almost as quickly as it was put through the letter box, however, it generated a lot of smoke and left the family living in the property under-standably very scared."

He said the house - holders had managed to flee the property before fire-fighters arrived at the scene. No one was injured in the incident.

A West Midlands Police spokesman confirmed officers had also been called to the address following the incident and an investigation was underway. Witnesses can call 0845 113 5000.
