Sprint king puts kids on track to glory

BUDDING Birmingham athletes learned lightning quick tips of the trade from a world class sprinter.

Children from Birmingham Row-heath Athletics Club met Kim Collins who won gold in the 100 metres in the 2003 World Championships.

The runner from St Kitts & Nevis was at the NIA with the organisation UK Athletics as part of the Gold Standard initiative which pairs talented youngsters with seasoned professionals.

He said: "Track and field is a great sport and once you love it, it's possible to be on top of the world in track and field. It is possible to get to the top."

Birmingham Rowheath athletics coach Andy Kenchington was pleased that Mr Collins was able to meet some of his students.

"It's just nice that he was able to meet them," he said.

"He is such an ordinary guy considering how successful he is. It will mean a lot to these students."

Mr Collins held a question and answer session where the young athletes were able to ask him about his sporting successes. He also spent time with them on the track at the NIA giving them tips about sprinting techniques and how to build confidence as an athlete.
